Video remote interpreting (VRI)

Video remote interpreting with certified ASL Interpreters.

Video remote interpreting (VRI) connects Deaf and hard of hearing people with a nationally certified ASL Interpreter over video. The Interpreter joins your appointment, class, or meeting remotely, so you get full access without travel fees or a two-hour minimum.

Video Remote Interpreting

Scheduled or on demand

Pre-scheduled appointments are ideal for recurring meetings, classes, and therapy sessions. You can request an Interpreter who specializes in your topic, at exceptionally reasonable hourly rates.

On-demand VRI covers last-minute needs with no waiting, including outside business hours, for ASL and more than 175 spoken languages.

Short an onsite team Interpreter?

Long or complex assignments often call for two Interpreters working as a team. When only one onsite Interpreter is available, a Virtual VRI Interpreter can join remotely as the second team member. We often help fill these gaps, and we do it successfully.

FAQ

Common questions

What is video remote interpreting (VRI)?

VRI is sign language interpreting delivered over video. The Deaf or hard of hearing person and the hearing participants are together (or in the same online meeting), and a certified Interpreter joins remotely by video to interpret between ASL and spoken English.

What's the difference between VRI and VRS?

Video Relay Service (VRS) is a free, federally funded service for phone calls between Deaf and hearing callers. VRI is a paid service that an organization books so a Deaf or hard of hearing person can communicate in an appointment, class, or meeting.

What do I need to use VRI?

A device with a camera and microphone and a high-speed internet connection. We'll run a free demo before your first session to make sure everything works.

Which video platforms do you support?

You can use Virtual VRI's Zoom room or your own platform. Our Interpreters have experience with Zoom, Blackboard Collaborate, Microsoft Teams, Cisco WebEx, and more.

Is there a minimum booking or travel fee?

No. Because interpreting is remote, there are no travel fees and no two-hour minimum.

Can a remote Interpreter team with our onsite Interpreter?

Yes. When a teamed assignment has only one onsite Interpreter available, a Virtual VRI Interpreter can join remotely as the second team member. We often help fill these gaps, and we do it successfully.
